Helping the Prostate

April 8th, 2011

The prostate is the male equivalent of the uterus, and like the uterus is prone to disharmony caused by hormone fluctuations and imbalances.  The main symptom of a prostate disharmony is difficult urination and can be accompanied by any or all of the following:  difficult urination can manifest either as painful urination, with or without blood, a burning sensation felt on the pelvic floor, bladder infections, excessive night time urination (nocturia), incomplete urination, a sense of urgency but scanty amount, dribbling after urination, and decreased force of urination.

Common prostate disharmonies in Western terms are malignant or benign prostatic hypertrophy, BPH, prostate cancer, prostatitis, incontinence, and urinary difficulty. These conditions all seem to be progressive in nature and get worse as we age.

In TCM, the main symptom of urinary difficulty is easily treated with herbs that promote urination like diuretics. This helps to stop the main symptom, but to treat the root cause requires careful examination of the entire body. Often there are also symptoms of premature aging, or other age related issues, lack of circulation, sometimes with or without inflammation, impotence, and hair loss.

Men with prostate disorders should be encouraged to eat foods rich in zinc like raw pumpkin seeds, pumpkin seed oil, and sunflower seeds. Also useful are foods rich in phyto-estrogens like yams, soy products as well as raw fresh wheat germ. Foods that should be avoided include watermelon, tomato, and fruits that are cold and/or sour.  Definitely tobacco, alcohol and excessively spicy foods should be eliminated. Sexual activity should be reduced or eliminated until conditions and symptoms are gone.

Acupuncture can help with prostate disorders too. Acupuncture can facilitate the flow of qi in the pelvic floor, which in turn, opens up the micro circulation. With adequate circulation, swelling decreases, and toxins are flushed away. Also, Acupuncture is relaxing, and helps the liver to relax and soften up so that it can metabolize testosterone into beneficial metabolites rather than DHT.
